Holy cow this is good! So I was home alone the other day and it was one of those days where my fridge was running low on supplies and I didn’t feel like running to the store. I was pretty much stuck with boring potatoes. I felt like using my delicious left over vodka sauce but I really wasn’t in the mood for pasta… Then it hit me- Animal style fries made with vodka sauce! I think I may have invented a revolutionary dish here folks.
For those of you who may not know what “Animal-Style” is, lemme ‘splain:
Animal-Style fries come from a wonderful place called In-n-Out. If you are from somewhere outside of California, I feel really sad that you may not have tasted the best burger in the world. In-n-Out serves burgers, (real) fries, shakes- and that’s it. The locals and the true-fans know the lingo of specials orders that are not listed on the menu. If you order your fries “animal-style” they come topped with thousand island dressing, American cheese and grilled onions. So with the pink color of vodka sauce, onions, and mozzarella cheese: my fries became Italian Animal-Style fries!
This dish kind of resembles a Canadian dish called Poutine. I have never had Poutine before but my Canadian friends rave all about it. According to what I heard, Poutine is french fries topped with gravy and cheese. Watch out gravy, here comes the vodka sauce!
Italian “Animal-Style” Fries
- 2-3 russet potatoes
- A cup of vodka sauce (I use Classico brand)
- A handful of shredded mozzarella cheese
- Half of a yellow onion
- Olive oil
Cut the potatoes into fry-size pieces (after washing them of course)
Cook the fries in a covered pan with a little olive oil or bake them at 375 for about 20 minutes, until soft.
Meanwhile, dice the onion into really small pieces and saute in olive oil until soft and translucent.
Heat the sauce and when everything is done, assemble in this order:
