Juice Recipes and Why I Eat Paleo

September 9, 2012

Juice:

But first, Paleo:

I have chose to follow the Paleo Diet for the past month and a half. I feel amazing!! This means I eat “caveman” style: real, unprocessed foods, ton of veggies, no dairy, no sugar, no processed wheat. With this diet, I honestly feel amazing every single day. I also have lost a few pounds and my nails are longer and stronger than ever before (it’s crazy to have such healthy nails, I never had these before in my life!). I just have to share my experience with you.

I chose to try out this Paleo lifestyle because I knew I had to change something drastic in my diet.  I already eat pretty healthy, I work out at the gym 4-5 times a week, I’m at a healthy weight, but I never really see a change. There is no way I was going to go on some kind of pre-made meal plan or start taking pills to tone up. The Paleo diet is something that I knew I could achieve. Besides, all the buff people at Cross Fit gyms eat this way, so it’s gotta be good.

In a nutshell, I cut out all bread, dairy and sugar. I eat A LOT of vegetables, which is where I get my carbs. I also eat all kinds of meat, fruits and quinoa. This lifestyle change has made me cut out all the mindless snacking on chips and crackers, saying “just this once” every time there is birthday cake at the office, and it’s encouraged me to explore new  recipes. I love it! My body loves it too.

I am very proud of myself and I could go on all day…. but I’m not going to bore you here with ALL of the details of Paleo. If you are interested in hearing more about my experience and challenges, check out my Tumblr page: Healthy & Happy, where I wrote all about it. Let me know what you think, and if you share a similar experience!

Now for the reason you are probably here:

The Juice Recipes

We recently bought a juicer and we make juice about 4-5 times a week. We don’t drink juice as a meal replacement, but more as a snack. It’s a glass full of nutrients! 90% of the nutrients come from the fruit and vegetable’s juice (so says my juicer’s instruction manual). Maybe this is why may nails are so strong now…

A good juicer can be kind of expensive and it can be just a little annoying to clean up (if you don’t have a dishwasher) but I think it’s worth it. I feel energized and ready to go after every juice. You can literally juice EVERYTHING. We’ve tried a lot of different combinations, here are our favorites so far:

Basic Vegetable

  • 1 Beet
  • 3 Carrots
  • 1 Apple
  • A bunch of kale
  • 4 Celery sticks

Ginger Citrus

  • 1 Sweet potato
  • 4 Celery sticks
  • 1 Inch fresh ginger
  • 1 Peeled orange

Parsnip Pear

  • 2 Parsnips
  • 2 Pears
  • 4 Celery Stalks
  • 1 Cucumber

Berry

  •  1 Pack blueberries
  • 1 pack black berries
  • 2 Cups strawberries
  • 1 Lime
My absolute favorite: Watermelon, Mint, Mango
  • About half of a watermelon
  • 2 Peeled mango
  • A bunch of fresh mint leaves

It’s amazing how all these things can come together and make such a delicious juice. It makes pretty colors too:

With everything mentioned above, I am feeling great, slowly loosing a few pounds and I am building my muscles at the gym… maybe in a few months I can post a “before and after” picture… ;)
